During the summer of 2019, Living for Zachary had the privilege of having Amisha join the Living for Zachary team as an intern.
Amisha chose to join us after being awarded the Living for Zachary Academic Scholarship in 2018. She graduated from Allen High School in 2018 and while in school she participated in the Health Profession Recruitment Exposure Program (HPREP) at UT Southwestern Medical School. Through this program, medical students and doctors mentor high school students to enrich them in medicine and science through hands on activities and workshops. In addition, Amisha served as club officer of the Red Cross Eagles for 3 years, organized comfort kits for the homeless, arranged blood drives at school, and volunteered at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. These experiences inspired Amisha to pursue her passion to help others through the medical field.
When Amisha received the call that she has been chosen as a Living for Zachary academic scholarship recipient in February 2018, she was shocked and grateful. Amisha says, “I am so honored to be a part of a unique organization like Living for Zachary. The work L4Z does for the community is incredible, and no other organization is so committed to helping students achieve their career goals.”
Amisha is currently a double major in Biochemistry and Management at Texas Tech University. She is also a member of the Helen Devitt Jones Leadership Scholars Program, which promotes students within Texas Tech to create and participate in becoming strong leaders in unique ways, and is an officer for Public Health Global Brigades, an international non-profit chapter that allows students to improve the health conditions in developing countries. During her freshman year, Amisha was able to fundraise and organize service projects for students in Public Health Brigades. She will be traveling to Ghana during Summer 2020, building latrines and water filtration system in a local village.
After graduating from Texas Tech, Amisha plans to attend an MD/MBA program in pursuit of continuing to help and make a difference in others’ lives as a specialized physician. She says, “Living for Zachary’s mission inspires me to always do more and stay positive. They have turned a tragedy into something extraordinary to help the well-being of others.”
It was Zachary Schrah’s dream to become a physician, and while he never was able to achieve this dream, we know that his story lives on in scholarship recipients like Amisha. One student at a time, Living for Zachary is committed to helping youth reach their goals and make an impact in their communities for years to come.
